Islam is not just a Religion, it’s a way of life. We have all heard this before but what does it mean to be a Muslim?
Personally I feel religion has become a farce of a word. I prefer the word Deen.
According to Google the most used search engine in the world; religion is a cultural system of behaviours and practices. No wonder no one wants to be religious anymore, no wonder the youth don’t give religion a second thought. If religion is about culture, I don’t want anything to do with it either. That implies we are all sheep and our beliefs are due to our environment. Is this true? Are you Catholic because your parents are? Are you Muslim because the majority of your peers are? Are you Jewish because you have been taught to be?
What I have learned is that your relationship with Allah subḥānahu wa ta’āla is a journey, it will take time. Your goal should be to worship your Creator more than the creation. However, unsustainable this seems, think of it in a way that if you love Allah subḥānahu wa ta’āla then put your Trust in Him too.
Whether you are Muslim or not, we all have a shared responsibility: to leave this world better than we entered it. Start with God. I urge you to better your relationship with God. Start with your relationship with Him. Talk to Him. Pray to Him. Worship Him and when I say Him, I don’t mean He is a Male, He is neither Male nor Female, He is God and as Muslims we say Allah subḥānahu wa ta’āla meaning in Arabic ‘the One exclusively worthy of deification and worship.’ Arab Christians and Jews also use the word Allah for God.
Next, don’t associate anything with Him. Don’t rely on fellow humans to sort your problems, don’t pray to saints or disciples for they were only Human just like you. Don’t Pray to Angels but recognise that they are with us, looking after us for God.
Give Charity. Give and Give and Give. To give is a blessing not to receive. To give, means that God has given you the means to give in the first place, He chose you to help someone in need. Don’t stop giving until you have reached Altruism. Giving doesn’t have to be money, if you are short on money, give in your time, your smile or your knowledge. A kind word is a form of charity – Prophet Muhammad Sall Allāhu ʿalay-hi wa-sallam.
Be positive. Positivity has a knock on effect. Don’t retaliate insult with insults, hate for hate. Smile and you will succeed. If you are are grateful I will surely give you more. Surah 14 Ayah 7; Holy Qur’an.
Make a goal. Start today and make a goal. Decide how you want to help the planet, even if your efforts appear insignificant, if everyone made one small improvement the world would become a better place to live in.
Regardless of your religious beliefs or outlook on life we all share one thing. A soul. A nafs. The cycle of life is undeniable; from life to death. He created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed – and He is the Exalted in Might, The Forgiving. Surah 67 Ayah 2; Holy Qur’an.
Whether you choose to believe or not, whatever we do, it’s our choice, we have a will, we have an option and to every decision we make no matter how insignificant there is a consequence.
If there is one thing I wish for in this life, is that I never forget this Dunya is a Test, a test of faith and sincerity. I wish that when I die, Allah subḥānahu wa ta’āla is pleased with me. I wish that everyone I know is guided to the Straight Path and I wish that every sacrifice for Allah (swt) is rewarded immensely Insha’Allah.
“Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.” Surah 2 Ayah 156; Holy Qur’an.
